while words encountered repeatedly in the context of stories and sounds remain for a long time.
A child memorizes 30 words the day before a vocabulary test and gets them all right, but when asked two weeks later, cannot remember even half. Many parents have seen this happen. It is not because the child lacks intelligence or effort. Test-oriented memorization is designed for short-term storage in the first place, so forgetting the words after the test is close to a natural outcome. If the goal of vocabulary during the elementary years is not test scores but a foundation for a lifetime of language use, the way it is built must change from the start.
The basic structure of a vocabulary list is to memorize English spellings paired with their Korean meanings. The problem with this approach is that it leaves out all information about the situations, sounds, and sentences in which a word is used. A pair stored without context can be retrieved on a test, but there is no link for retrieving and using it in actual listening and speaking situations. This is why a child who knows that apple means sagwa may still fail to recognize the word when hearing it in an English video.
Moreover, memorizing a context-free list is a demanding task for an elementary-aged child. Children find rote memorization more tedious than adults do, and that boredom can easily develop into a dislike of English itself. If a child learns a few more words but develops a worse attitude toward English, it is not a worthwhile trade-off.
Words remain not according to how many times they were memorized,
but according to how many times they were encountered again in different stories.
When a child encounters a word in a book or video, its sound, meaning, scene, and surrounding sentences are stored together as one unit. The memory is vague at first, but each time the same word appears again in a different story, another link is added. If a child encounters huge in a dinosaur book, sees it again in a space story, and hears it again in a cartoon character's dialogue, the word becomes a word the child knows rather than knowledge the child has memorized.
Words built this way have a different character. They are understood as soon as they are heard and come out naturally in similar situations. The pace may seem slower than vocabulary-list memorization, but the direction is different because the words accumulate without disappearing. Because tests are not yet urgent during the elementary years, this is also almost the only period when time can be invested in an approach that is slow but lasting.
First, provide extensive reading and listening at the child's level. The standard is to choose books and videos with no more than two or three unfamiliar words per page. If there are too many unfamiliar words, context cannot reveal their meanings, and the exposure becomes noise. Second, provide opportunities to retrieve and use learned words. Simply saying one sentence aloud or writing a short sentence using a word encountered that day changes how deeply it is stored. Third, reduce the desire to meet a daily word count. Spending time helping the child encounter familiar words again ultimately leaves the child with more vocabulary than continually adding new words.

What to Check Before Asking a Child to Memorize
Each time the same word appears in a different book, video, or scene, another memory link is added. Encountering it multiple times leaves a stronger memory than looking at it for a long time in a single sitting.
Words known only by their spelling are not recognized in listening and do not come out in speaking. It is better for children to encounter new words first through their ears rather than their eyes and to choose materials with audio.
Words a child recognizes and words a child can retrieve and use are stored at different depths. Words that a child has spoken or written, even in a single sentence, become part of the child's own vocabulary.
Context can reveal meaning only when there are no more than two or three unfamiliar words per page. Struggling with overly difficult materials is closer to noise than exposure.
